Art and science connected with light
GLOW 2011 'Illusion and Reality"

From November 5th till November 12th the sixth edition of the GLOW light art festival takes place in Eindhoven, with "Illusion and Reality" as this years theme. A wide variety of light objects will be exposed in the City of Light on a specially marked route. This year two celebrating institutions are connected: the 55-year old Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) and the 75-year old Van Abbe Museum. Last year a record number of 250,000 visitors from home and abroad visited the festival, which is free of charge.

Maze of Colour
Eindhoven is a city of many aspects, it changes between being open and insular, between dense architecture and green open spaces, between light and dark. What at one moment seems to be a peaceful garden, becomes if twilight falls, a decor of eerie shadows. A romantic bridge or a chilly bicycle tunnel transforms at night into a beacon of light or a maze of color. What is illusion and what is reality, where ends reality and begins art? Or is Eindhoven’s reality already an art in itself? The theme of GLOW 2011 challenges both the artists and the audience into an exploration of a mystery. Where science and art meet light is an indispensable building material. It’s for the audience to experience the power of light.

Power of light
GLOW 2011 links various cityscapes in a route which also connects two celebrating institutions of the city: the 55-year old Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) and the 75-year old Van Abbe Museum. Which embodies illusion and which reality is left open, if it comes to creativity both are needed. The four kilometer route is divided into two parts, as is the theme. On the one hand there is the urban environment of the city; areas where concrete and intense contemporary urbanity set the tone and where artists with firm statements battle with advertising, streetlights and consumerism. On the other hand there are the banks of the river Dommel and the green of the TU/e campus. Artists need to sharpen their creativity to add something to the wellknown context. And the viewers have to surrender to the power of light. The reward is always a surprising and inspiring experience that leaves an everlasting impression.

GLOW is a dynamic event of international stature that takes place in Eindhoven, where light, art, design and technology converge and develope continuously.
The organization has again contracted international light artists who present a mix of spectacular light projections and understated conceptual lighting installations of high quality which changes the city view.
