In 20 Steps

Lightfall

Throughout history, humanity has always had the fervent desire to understand nature and transcend earthly limitations. No matter how advanced science and technology may become, some things will always remain beyond reach. ‘In 20 Steps’ is a tribute to humanity and its eternal drive and perseverance to learn how to fly.

Studio Drift developed ‘In 20 Steps’ for the Venice Biennale in 2015. This spatial, kinetic installation consists of twenty pairs of delicate glass tubes. The glass ‘wings’ abstractly depict twenty phases of flight, while simultaneously showing the complete wing movement at a single moment. The movements are driven by 20 motors that communicate with each other. The choice to use glass underscores the subtlety of the motion and the fragility of nature.

About the artist

Studio DRIFT

The various projects of Studio Drift share a common thread – they are always in motion. Whether it’s the fluff of Fragile Future, which seems ready to blow away at any moment, or the graceful forms of Shylights – folded lamps that descend in space according to suggested characteristics – there is always a vital, explorative, and unconventional energy underlying their works. This energy arises from unbridled curiosity and a critical attitude. The urge to create is not merely a creative impulse but a belief that reality does not need to be accepted passively. Expectation patterns shift by creating objects and spaces that provide insight and create awareness of the relationship between humans and nature; humans and the constructed world. This reveals a new reality.
