Piazza
Under the roof of the Piazza, used lighting fixtures are given a second life in a swinging setup reminiscent of a Big Band. The fixtures, which were on the verge of being demolished, once made us feel safe on the streets and helped us find our way. They illuminated our streets, bike paths, traffic roads, and sports fields, or served as traffic or orientation lights. But now, they stand together in a band to make you, the visitor, dance.
All fixtures are equipped with controllable Philips HUE bulbs, which can produce countless colors of light. Each repurposed lighting fixture represents an instrument of the Big Band. The musical ensemble plays four dynamic tracks typical of a 1930s Big Band repertoire. Each fixture is synchronized with the score of a characteristic instrument from a Big Band, where the pitch is translated into a light color and the volume controls the intensity of the light. All of this is made possible by the arrangement of Rot8ion (Rob van Rooij).
This light artwork is a tribute to all lighting elements, as a thank you for their many years of loyal service. After GLOW, most fixtures will be able to retire. However, some refurbished fixtures have been so well revived that they can begin a new life of lighting. You can buy these veterans during GLOW! Check out the kiosk at the Beursgebouw or visit www.krachtstroom040.nl to get your hands on a shining fixture for your home.
All fixtures, which were sorted as waste, were made available by the municipality of Eindhoven, Heijmans, Spie, Avalite, and Smartlight.
