Bridging Worlds

Bridging Worlds

Step into the light. Become part of the connection.

This artwork was created by the MYP2 students of Sondervick International School, part of Sondervick College. Many of these students have moved to Veldhoven from different parts of the world as part of international families working in the Brainport region. They bring with them different languages, cultures, memories, and experiences. Their lives are examples of bridging worlds: connecting places, perspectives, and identities that might otherwise remain separate.

What connects us?

  • A friendship.
  • A shared passion.
  • A team. A school.
  • A familiar face on the street.
  • Or simply walking the dog and meeting someone along the way.

We are shaped by the places where we grow up, the people we meet, and the moments we share. For the students of MYP2, the journey of discovering who they are is also a journey of bridging worlds. Many have lived in different countries and cultures, learning to move between communities, languages, and ways of seeing the world. Finding connection, finding people who inspire you, understand you, or simply walk beside you, becomes part of finding yourself.

At this stage of their lives, students are exploring their identity and their place in the world. Identity is never shaped in isolation. The people we meet, the places we live, and the communities we become part of all leave their mark on us. In turn, we leave our own mark on the world around us. Through these experiences, we become bridges ourselves, connecting different worlds through our relationships and shared experiences.

This artwork explores the relationship between identity, environment, and connection.

The illuminated silhouettes represent the individual journeys of the students: unique, evolving, and still taking shape. Each figure stands on its own, yet together they become part of something larger. The installation reflects how our paths intersect, how our experiences influence one another, and how the connections we make help shape who we become. The space between the figures is just as important as the figures themselves, symbolizing the bridges we build between our worlds.

For these students, Veldhoven is more than a place to live. It is where friendships are formed, cultures meet, and new memories are created. Just as the Brainport region brings together people from around the world, this artwork reflects the many different paths that converge in one shared community. Here, worlds are bridged every day.
Through this artwork, the students invite the community to see connection in a different light. Bridging worlds is not only about bringing people together. It is about understanding one another, sharing experiences, and recognizing that our differences enrich the communities we create. Every connection becomes part of the bridge.

Different worlds.
Different stories.
Connected by light.

About the artist

Sondervick college

For Sondervick College, taking part in GLOW Veldhoven is a natural way to celebrate these connections. The school is rooted in the Veldhoven community while also being part of the international Brainport region. Different worlds, perspectives and experiences come together under one roof, just as they do in Veldhoven itself.
With this artwork, the students invite the community to look at connection from a different perspective: not simply as something between people, but as something that shapes who we are and the place we share.

Different backgrounds. Different stories. Connected by light.

This project is a pilot of the Educational Route developed by Kim van Laanen (teacher SiNTLUCAS), Jaap van den Elzen (professional light artist) and Sabine Swinkels (GLOW Academy). Partners: Bazelmans, ASML, Sondervick College
