Lowlights

Gudrun Barenbrock creates paintings, videos, and spatial installations. In Lowlights, she combines the last two media. Video footage is projected onto four semi-transparent screens, making them visible on the canvases and also as an echo on the floor behind them. The recordings show light effects found on the streets, in houses, or in traffic. The sun shining through blinds, cars racing by, or shadow patterns in the greenery are transformed into almost abstract patterns that are hardly recognizable.

The images are displayed in one of the buildings of Hoge Rug, a remarkable row of buildings in Strijp S dating back to 1928. The interior space of the stripped-down concrete building starkly contrasts with the airy, transparent video images. On some evenings, the artist mixed the images live and combined them with music from a trio playing trumpet, saxophone, and tuba, creating an audiovisual concert.
