Synthetic Minds

Synthetic Minds

Anne Frankplantsoen

They almost seem alive: the glowing, breathing plasma spheres. Each sphere is unique, pulsing to its own rhythm. Your eyes are naturally drawn to them: the dynamic interplay of light and movement is captivating. It feels as if the spheres are inviting you: come closer. Look at us. Move with us.

You are welcome to touch the spheres as well. When you do, you will see the light become brighter and more intense. They are much like the thoughts in your mind. When you give them attention, they grow stronger. Thoughts come and go, each with its own rhythm, just like the pulsing spheres before you.

Student Filippo Rodolfi (Fontys Industrial Design Engineering) chose plasma for these spheres for good reason. More than ninety percent of the visible universe consists of plasma. It is found in stars, in lightning and in the northern lights. It is ever-present in the sky above us, and at the same time, it has something elusive, just like our thoughts. Walk around the spheres, look at them, touch them. And you will notice: just as easily as thoughts arise, they also fade away. In our often fast-paced society, that is a comforting and calming idea.

During GLOW 2025 you will see another work by students from Fontys IDE, located at Nieuwe Emmasingel. Will you go take a look?

About the artists

Fontys IDE

Filippo Rodolfi is a student at Fontys Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) in Venlo. He is also an athlete and passionate BMX rider. Sport has taught him discipline, resilience and a constant drive for innovation and self-expression. Rodolfi sees creativity as a powerful tool for conveying ideas, emotions and experiences.

Last year, Fontys IDE participated in GLOW for the first time. On that occasion, students from this programme teamed up with students from SintLucas. Together they created Aurora, a tribute to the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis.
