Alexandre Burton and Julien Roy explore unknown applications of familiar materials and techniques. They frequently use new media for their research and often develop their own software and hardware.
For “Bulbes,” the artist duo has hung large incandescent bulbs in a strict grid pattern in one of the rooms of the Designhuis, Eindhoven’s former courthouse. The bulbs have a diameter of twenty centimeters and a power of one thousand watts. When the filament is energized, a subtle sound is heard, varying in pitch and intensity depending on the voltage. The artists use this principle to play the light bulbs like an orchestra.
The abstract sound composition spreads throughout the space and is visually paralleled by the intensity of the lit bulbs. The audience can move around the setup or sit among the lamps, experiencing the audiovisual installation from all angles.
