De Oorsprong

A number of luminescent ropes hang above a garden area in the Regentekwartier district between Willemstraat and Lichtstraat. These LED rope lights are attached to the neighbouring residential buildings.

Together, the ropes form an anamorphosis; a deformed spatial construction which only adopts its true shape when viewed from one specific point: the origin. In Genesis, the biblical story of creation, the origin of light is based on mythological and religious legend: in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And God said: ‘Let there be light!’ And there was light. And God saw that the light was good. God separated the light from the darkness; God called the light ‘day’, and He called the darkness ‘night’. In physics, light is defined as electromagnetic radiation that can be perceived by the human eye. Light consists of photons, small packages of energy which arise when atoms in a high energy state revert to a lower energy state. And that reversion process releases atomic energy in the form of a photon, or light quantum. Atoms are brought to a higher energy state when exposed to heat, and in atomic fission or atomic fusion processes. The latter is the process which produces the energy of the sun, the star closest to the Earth.

The question of how light was created can be answered in various ways based on different perspectives. Was light created by a superior being, or is it the result of an evolutionary cosmological process? We will never know why light exists… And that remains a magnificent mystery.

Har Hollands

Har Hollands is a light architect. His activities range from concept development via light visualizations and demonstrations to product specification and support during execution.

Light to Har Hollands generates a feeling of safety and security, facilitates orientation, is a powerful means for communication, strengthens the unique qualities of places and moments, creates atmospheres and acts like a magical tool during the hours of darkness: The domain of the fantasy. He tries to translate and to integrate the functional, aesthetical and emotional aspects of the demands – which have to be addressed – into a fascinating night-time experience.

Besides being an independent lighting consultant/designer he was curator of the light festival ‘GLOW’ in Eindhoven from 2010 until 2015; a forum for light in art and architecture. As ‘Fellow’ of the ‘Intelligent lighting institute’ he was also related to the ‘Eindhoven University of Technology’ where he provided lectures at the department of ‘Industrial Design’.
