Human Tiles

Flower

Den Ekker

The light art installation Human Tiles immediately brings to mind the beautiful ceramic tiles (azulejos) often seen on buildings in Portugal. It’s a unique tradition in that country. But there’s something strange going on with these azulejos. They move, change color, rotate, and warp. What exactly are you looking at?

You, our visitor, make GLOW. That’s certainly true of this work. Take a good look at Human Tiles by the Portuguese artist collective OCUBO. You’re not just observing—you’re creating it, together with the surrounding others. In real time, your movements and the colors of your clothing are captured and transformed into dynamic graphic patterns that you then see reflected on the facade. And so, Human Tiles reimagines the centuries-old graphic language of azulejos into an intriguing light art installation that you can’t stop looking at. A work that celebrates our connection with others. What do you recognize of yourself in it?
