Lichttoren

The orange glow of Eindhoven could once be seen from miles away — warm light shining from the Lichttoren, where countless light bulbs were once tested. These ‘lempkes’ have long since disappeared from the city, but Eindhoven’s deep connection with light remains. With Lempke, Jan Fabel, Pim Rongen and Erwin Steijlen pay tribute to this glowing history.

For a moment, the lempkes return to the Lichttoren. Using 3D projection, the artist collective brings the lamps back to life. You see them glow, flicker, tumble and move in delightful, unexpected ways. During GLOW, the light bulb is no longer hidden behind the tall white walls of the Lichttoren, but shines upon them. It is one of the most beautiful projection surfaces in Eindhoven: solid, white, spacious. Jan Fabel works with projection mapping, placing each light pixel precisely in its own spot on the building. The shape of the building determines what you see. Naturally, the story that unfolds must connect to that building, the artists believe, and it does. This installation celebrates twenty years of GLOW and nearly two centuries of the light bulb. Centuries of flickering fire, ideas captured in glass, warmth and brightness.
