About the artist
Fontys studenten Technische Natuurkunde
The complete setup, developed by students of Technical Physics and Engineering at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, consists of 10 parts connected with LED strips. The setup is automatically controlled and will play in a loop.
Our team consists of 16 Fontys students at Rachelsmolen, Eindhoven. They are Joy Dorant, Anke van Dijk, Shannon Declerc, Koos Grens, Inge Manders, Victor Jellema, Sofie Mc Luskey, Toon Buurman, Mart Meijerink, Masha Fedeasina, Jeffrey van Os, Dana Martens, Thomas Postma, Mariƫlle Root, Floris Pronk, and Koen Theeuwen. These students were guided by Ellen Moerman, a lecturer in Technical Physics.
This light art installation is an optical Rube Goldberg machine, named after the American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg. It refers to a complex device that performs a simple task indirectly and in a roundabout way. The different components are interconnected and interact with each other.
The name of the project, ‘Licht Gewicht’ (Light Weight), originates from the theme where light in this setup seems to have mass or weight. The light moves through the arrangement as if it were a substance, and it takes a central role in each component.
