Lucy

Karkas Victoriapark

High in the sky, Lucy sparkles like a diamond. Her presence seems so natural, yet she was always invisible. At one moment her skin is pure white, and the next she glows like a massive disco ball.

Lucy’s dynamics depend on the strength and direction of the wind. Four enormous searchlights from World War II illuminate her. For Project Lucy, four of these searchlights, known as Carbon Arcs from 1942, have been restored and powered by green energy. They are the brightest lamps ever made. The power of one lamp is equivalent to 800 million candles.

During the war, the Carbon Arcs were vital in detecting and shooting down enemy bombers at night. Now, they serve only as light art, bringing Lucy to life as a work of art. Inspired by the vast, boundless universe that rises above us—elusive and withholding its secrets. Lucy may resemble a star, but you can almost touch her. A star made especially for the city of Eindhoven. She pokes light-filled holes in the sky and makes it twinkle.

About the artist

Ivo Schoofs & Pepe Heijnen

Ivo Schoofs loves to experiment, build prototypes, and create kinetic art, moving light objects, and festival installations. He didn’t graduate in physics for nothing. “I want to show the beauty of science and technology in a way that people can understand,” he told the Eindhovens Dagblad in 2017. As a young boy, he was already making things, creating objects or building devices. This stimulated his fascination with natural and physical phenomena like gravity, motion, heat, light, lightning, and friction. Schoofs’ light artworks are often based on these natural and physical phenomena.

Pepe Heijnen is interested in connecting technology and art. Since childhood, he has been working with cables, ropes, and other connections. As a broadly trained electrical engineer in high and low voltage, he specializes in electronics and automation. His fascination with machines and motion, physics, lightning, and the world of Nikola Tesla drives him to tie technical ends together in art, fiction, and experience. Pepe has already created several works for GLOW and is a familiar artist in Eindhoven.
