Meadow

Meadow

Meadow is an upside down landscape, the kinetic sculpture consists of mechanical flowers that open and close in a poetic choreography. The installation reminds the viewer of the impermanence of constantly changing seasons and sensational character of natural growth processes.

Most man-made objects have a static form, while everything natural in this world including people, are subject to constant metamorphosis and adaptation to their surroundings. Meadow is the result of the question how an inanimate object can mimic those changes that express character and emotions.

As an upside down landscape the kinetic sculpture reacts to the visitors as if they were the sun to a blooming flower. All flowers together create the experience of a botanical creature that naturally engages the viewer.

About the artist

DELA & StudioDrift

DELA (Draagt Elkanders Lasten) is a cooperative with over three million members. Since our establishment in Eindhoven in 1937, the principle of “strength in unity” has been at the core, enabling us to achieve more together. Our goal is to support our members and their families with funeral or cremation services, repatriation, bereavement care, and financial services in these areas. With approximately 145 branches, 2,400 employees, 3.7 million insured individuals, and 42,000 funerals per year, DELA is the market leader in the Benelux region.

Studio Drift was founded in 2007 by Lonneke Gordijn (1980) and Ralph Nauta (1978), both of whom graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2005. The relationship between nature / people / technology is central in their installations and interactive sculptures. Gordijn’s fascination with nature and that of Nauta for science-fiction and technology come together in an intriguing way.

For more than a decade of their existence, Studio Drift’s work in product and furniture design has grown into ever-larger, often location-specific and moving installations that they have realized all over the world. The works occupy a unique place between disciplines such as technical art, performance and bio-design. Data and algorithms derived from natural phenomena often form the basis for Studio Drift’s work – for example the flight pattern of a flock of birds. Using advanced technologies they translate this data into poetic, meditative experiences. Their ideas regularly anticipate technological possibilities. That is why they work together with scientists, programmers, engineers and other specialists on the development of projects.
