Monoculture

Dynamo

In Monoculture, Gion Berlijn explores the role of digital media in human communication and the spread of information. The internet presents itself as a liberating and connecting network, but in reality, it fragments public life. Contagious narratives – often radical or controversial – spread rapidly and silence other perspectives. Algorithms mute diverse voices and reduce complex issues into polarized, one-dimensional conflicts.

The installation consists of 32 CRT screens and lasers forming a network through which a narrative spreads like a virus. The images gradually shift until all screens display the same signal – a visual metaphor for how a single dominant narrative can overshadow diversity. Monoculture confronts visitors with the speed at which digital communication replaces depth and reflection with immediacy and reaction.
