Perception

Perception

Anne Frankplantsoen

You can see light with your eyes. That much is certain. But are there other senses through which you can perceive light? With the light installation by Team IGNITE, the student team from Eindhoven University of Technology, you can experience it for yourself. You perceive light through sound, warmth, and touch.

Now imagine the perspective of someone who is blind or has limited vision. Team IGNITE was inspired by people with visual impairments when creating this installation. Their central questions were: how can we make GLOW more accessible and welcoming for more people? And how can we encourage visitors to reflect on how others experience the world?

The installation follows the movement of light with sound and warmth, guiding you around a cylindrical artwork. Follow the interactive path towards the installation and you will see the interwoven patterns up close. These patterns symbolize different perspectives and how they can enrich one another when combined.

GLOW celebrates visibility with light. We do this together with you, the visitor, with students, and with the city. You create GLOW, and GLOW is for everyone. This artwork fits the festival perfectly. It shows and allows you to feel what it means to look through someone else’s eyes, and how important that is. Connection does not depend on seeing the same things. It arises when we understand each other just a little better.

About the artists

Team IGNITE

The Perception project team is part of Team IGNITE, the student team from Eindhoven University of Technology. It is the very first Art and Tech team in the Netherlands. Their mission is to break the boundaries between art and technology and to create light installations that bring people together. Through the unique combination of light, art, and technology, they surprise, connect, and encourage reflection. Team IGNITE consists of more than forty students from a wide range of disciplines, from Industrial Design to Applied Physics and everything in between. You may have seen Team IGNITE’s work at GLOW before, such as last year’s Skyway, an installation about light pollution.

The Perception project team consists of Phoebe Dusil, Daria Stana, Liz-Anne Schmaal, and Eline Westerbeek.
