Photonic modulation

This project came into being through a unique collaboration between the University of Technology Eindhoven and Van Abbemuseum: both celebrating their anniversaries. To commemorate this, both world-famous institutes decided to work together during GLOW this year by connecting technology to art in a very special manner.

Hovering above the surface of the pond at the University of Technology’s compound, there is this recreation of the Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy’s artwork, called ‘Licht-Raum-Modulator’; a projection in the original lighting conditions creating the self-same atmosphere. This work of art is part of the GLOW Museum Special which takes place at Van Abbemuseum from 12 to 19 November. During the weeks before GLOW, this piece of art has been transformed by the University of Technology into a virtual form, which is now projected by three-colour-LEDs into a transparent cube of 3*3*3 metres. The result is an ongoing play of moving parts which, together with the surroundings, create an exciting light experience.

About the artist

Cooperation between TU/e, Ambianti BV & Van Abbemuseum

The TU/e Video Coding and Architectures group of Electrical Engineering, specifically led by Professor Peter de With and Assistant Professor Egor Bondarev, created the replica of the sculpture after accurately scanning it in 3D using their 3D reconstruction software. Based on this scan, the replica was developed in collaboration with the specialized metal company GPM. Georgios Metaxas from the company Ambianti worked tirelessly for weeks, from early mornings until late evenings, to create the “supercomputer” and write and configure the software. Additionally, this company encapsulated the electronics in tiles made of polymers that are transparent and waterproof. The Department of Applied Physics and the Institute for Photonic Integration also contributed their ideas to the project.
