Step into the Light

Step into the Light

Piet Blomplein

Step into the spotlight, pause for a moment, look up and around you. What do you feel? Chances are this light artwork will overwhelm you, like a bright tidal wave. The work is grand, and you are right at the center of it. It is your experience—together with the experiences of all the other visitors—that creates this piece. The interaction between light and people, what you see and what you feel: it all comes together here.

Fourteen years ago, the old location of Het Speelhuis burned down completely. From the theater, built from its characteristic cubes, little remained. In Michel Suk’s work, the former theater location returns for a moment, like a luminous echo from the past. A memorial to the beautiful performances and special moments you may have experienced there. Ephemeral like light, fleeting like a memory, yet vividly real. Stay for a while, let your thoughts drift along all you have seen. And when you move on, carry the warm glow of those cherished memories with you—in your heart and in your mind.

Step into the Light consists of individually controlled lamps, with which the artist creates different light patterns and a surprising play of lines. With the addition of sound, rhythm, speed, and an infectious energy emerge. Can’t get enough of this work? Then travel to Veldhoven as well, where you can see the piece in a completely different light at De Plaatse parking area.

About the artist

Michel Suk

This year marks twenty years of GLOW. Two decades of light art, in which light artist Michel Suk has always been involved: behind the scenes as well as with his own projects. Examples include Out of the Blue (2007), Rejoice in the Lamb (2010), Schoonheid van stagnatie (The Beauty of Stagnation, 2011), Transformatie (2012), State Machine (2014), Opening Stadhuis (2015). Since 2016, Step into the Light has been shown during various editions.

Suk’s work provokes curiosity, precisely because he uses conventional techniques to create unconventional installations. His pieces open up new perspectives, for instance by placing the viewer and/or the light sources in unexpected positions. The relationship between the artwork and the viewer also sparks wonder, as Suk’s installations are often monumental in scale. In his installations, Suk always works with light and sound.
