De Markt
A Whisper from Days Gone By is a heartfelt project with residents of care homes in Helmond. During careful and gentle conversations, they spoke about moments from their childhood and youth. The sound of a summer day, the smell of the kitchen, a first smile, a song never forgotten. From these memories, short texts emerged, like fragments. Sometimes just a single sentence, sometimes a passing thought. During GLOW these words and phrases become visible as bright light projections. Fleeting yet present, just like memory itself.
The people who took part in this project are an essential part of the artwork. Their emotions, their vulnerability, their experiences and knowledge are placed literally in the light during GLOW. And you are warmly invited to share in this, here at the Market in Helmond. Look at this work and feel connected with the residents who participated, and with the elderly of Helmond in particular. Which memories move you?
Annique van den Heuvel from CultuurContact conducted the conversations with the elderly of Helmond. Sigrid Sandmann transformed the interviews into this beautiful light artwork. She previously appeared at GLOW in 2012 with her work Expression – from the unmoved face to the speaking expression. Back then, she projected words and sentences onto the Hooghuis.
