80 years of freedom

80 years of freedom

Willemstraat

Eighty years ago, Eindhoven was liberated, a moment the residents celebrated by placing small lights in their windows. They did this not only out of joy, but also as a gesture of gratitude to the soldiers who brought them light and freedom after a dark time. This beautiful, symbolic gesture has since grown into a tradition in Eindhoven. Each year, from September 18 until the second Sunday of October, a ribbon of light ornaments spans a 22 km route along public roads as a reminder of Liberation Day on September 18, 1944.

This year, the Lichtjesroute celebrates its 40th anniversary and will also be featured at GLOW Eindhoven. In 1984, the foundation was established by a small group of people responding to a call in the newspaper. Earlier initiatives were combined into a great success. The Lichtjesroute not only celebrates freedom, but this year also pays tribute to former CEO Wim van der Leegte, who passed away last year. As a regional employer with a big social heart, Van der Leegte had special significance for the Lichtjesroute and his community. His contributions and commitment remain an inspiration to many, and with this special edition of the Lichtjesroute, we thank him for everything he meant.
