Earthkeepers

Mariënhage Pad

Ancient trees line the slowly flowing Dommel river. The rich history of this location makes Pad Mariënhage a unique green space in the heart of Eindhoven. Here, past and present meet and intertwine in harmony. Machteld Aardse and Femke Kempkes bring these layered stories to light, together with residents of the neighbourhood. In the lead-up to GLOW, they organised two walks of wonder. During the first walk, residents explored the ecological value of Pad Mariënhage and its surroundings in the here and now, guided by biologist Mark Scheepens from Waterschap De Dommel. The second walk focused on the area’s history, led by Loes Heuvelmans from the Regional Historical Centre Eindhoven.

The trees that characterise this green stretch take centre stage in the light installation Earthkeepers. In light, they seem to stretch beyond the houses, appearing even more majestic. Between the trees, you will see drawings that reference both nature and local history. This is the work that Machteld and Femke created in response to the two walks. It invites you to look at Pad Mariënhage through new eyes. It shows that when you learn more about your surroundings — about the nature, the history — you automatically grow more attached to the place. And perhaps, when you head home afterwards, you will look at your own familiar neighbourhood in a completely new way.

About the artists

Machteld Aardse & Femke Kempkes

Curiosity about the stories of a place is what drives Machteld Aardse and Femke Kempkes. What was here before us, and who shaped the place into what it is today? They go in search of these answers and translate their findings into enchanting light installations. Last year, they appeared at GLOW with Our Light, a project that brought to light the hidden stories of the Eindhoven neighbourhood De Bergen.

Femke Kempkes, born in 1971 in the Netherlands, is an artist trained in sculpture at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. She continuously looks for ways to create interaction and often collaborates with residents and users of specific places. Her work frequently results in large-scale community projects. In addition to her own practice, she teaches spatial design and art history.

Machteld Aardse (1972, NL) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. She first studied Art History and later obtained her Master’s degree from the Dutch Art Institute. For her, everything begins with drawing and painting, which then extends into media such as animation, performance, and light projections. She is fascinated by the role of the human being within their environment, exploring both their strength and their vulnerability.
