About the artists
Machteld Aardse & Femke Kempkes
Curiosity about the stories of a place is what drives Machteld Aardse and Femke Kempkes. What was here before us, and who shaped the place into what it is today? They go in search of these answers and translate their findings into enchanting light installations. Last year, they appeared at GLOW with Our Light, a project that brought to light the hidden stories of the Eindhoven neighbourhood De Bergen.
Femke Kempkes, born in 1971 in the Netherlands, is an artist trained in sculpture at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. She continuously looks for ways to create interaction and often collaborates with residents and users of specific places. Her work frequently results in large-scale community projects. In addition to her own practice, she teaches spatial design and art history.
Machteld Aardse (1972, NL) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. She first studied Art History and later obtained her Master’s degree from the Dutch Art Institute. For her, everything begins with drawing and painting, which then extends into media such as animation, performance, and light projections. She is fascinated by the role of the human being within their environment, exploring both their strength and their vulnerability.
