There is a majestic tree in Eindhoven’s Vonderkwartier. Artists Femke Kempkes and Machteld Aardse drew inspiration from the tree and set out into the neighborhood with residents of the Vonderkwartier, seniors from Vitalis Vonderhof, and the city forester, searching for tales. What animals burrow among the roots? What kinds of butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves? Who once played hide-and-seek by this tree, shared a first kiss here, sought shelter under its canopy, or found comfort here?
The tree stretches its branches wide; its roots grow beneath the houses. It is a unifying force in the neighborhood: a collector of stories and memories. Together with the artists, the residents translated these stories, which until recently were hidden, into drawings that will literally be in the spotlight during GLOW. You can see them here! Together, they reveal the deep, rooted structure of their neighborhood.
About the artist
For artists Femke Kempkes and Machteld Aardse, the history or contemporary stories of a place always serve as the starting point. They draw on archives and their interactions with residents; they document and collect material to ultimately create their light projections. In this way, they bring the human and personal perspective back into public spaces.
