Lidwina church
A majestic red deer, proud and colourful, gazes straight at you. This animal lives in De Mortelen, a nature reserve on the border between Best and Oirschot. You would not easily come across a deer like this in the wild. No, you would have to venture deep into nature to spot one. In her signature illustrative, fairytale like style, visual artist Maartje Meerman brings the connection between people and nature to life through her work in Best.
For this special artwork, Maartje Meerman hand painted three small glass plates, each measuring 18 by 18 centimetres. Using a powerful projector, the images are enlarged and displayed inside Lidwina Church. Perhaps the composition reminds you of Hieronymus Bosch. And that is no coincidence: he was an important source of inspiration for Maartje. Bosch also had a strong connection to the area between Best and Oirschot. The land once belonged to Aleid van de Meervenne, whom the famous painter married. This estate, known as Ten Rodeken, later became known as Land van Bosch.
The projection contains references to the nature of this region, as well as to Bosch’s famous painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. Let yourself be swept away by the colourful imagery and the musical composition created especially for this artwork by composer Sibract. And look closely: can you spot the different elements that refer to Hieronymus Bosch’s renowned masterpiece?
A special feature: Maartje Meerman created a diptych especially for GLOW. You can discover the companion piece at the Old Town Hall in Oirschot. In this way, her artworks literally connect the two towns of Oirschot and Best.
