The Value of Things to come

The Value of Things to come

The British artist Graham Hudson noticed that Eindhoven has relatively many construction sites, in Strijp-S as well as in the city center. According to him, this indicates that it is a city where significant efforts are being made to improve the living environment. This thought served as the starting point for “The Value of Things to come.”

In the construction site at Vrijstraat stands a large crane, which Hudson employs for his work during GLOW. The crane carries a lightbox that used to serve as an advertisement at a London garage for many years. A few years ago, due to redevelopment of the area, this business, established in 1926, had to close its doors. The artist wanted to preserve the advertising sign as a symbol of change.

Now, it hovers in the center of Eindhoven, sometimes high above buildings, sometimes just above the road surface, in a strange environment and with a new purpose. The crane and the sign evoke associations with construction and demolition, showing that to create new things, one must bid farewell to others.
