The Veil

The Veil

The visitor is given a device to wear on their head that records activity in various brain regions. The artist then provides a short instruction, and the visitor practices for a few minutes. Finally, using only attention and concentration, the visitor attempts to change the color of a spherical lamp. Four mental “actions” result in four different colors.

The setup was designed by fashion designer Su-Wen Leong. Music by Kyriakou provides a calm and constant factor, allowing the visitor to focus on the brain exercises as effectively as possible. The artist sees potential applications for this new method of control in various fields in the future.

About the artist

Marie-Anne Kyriakou

Mary-Anne Kyriakou works as a lighting designer, visual artist, and musician. She creates installations that involve all of these areas of focus. Through her work, she explores the effect of light or sound on the human psyche. In “The Veil,” she reverses this and demonstrates how lighting can be influenced by brain activity.
