Ayn

Ayn

Under the pipes of the Leidingstraat, which provided electricity and gases to all Philips buildings in Strijp-S, four circular projection screens are installed.

On these screens, footage of rotating monks in white robes is shown. These are dervishes, followers of Sufism, who try to get closer to God through dance. These images are interspersed with short clips of everyday life. The same projection occasionally appears on the ground, among the audience.

The artists juxtapose earthly life against the higher or mystical realm. They literally do this by directing the visitor’s gaze upward to another mysterious world. The screens themselves resemble eyes (Ayn means eye or eyes) looking down on the audience. By combining images of a mystical dance with everyday scenes and projecting both above and among the spectators, questions are raised about the relationship between above and below, high and low, heavenly and earthly.
