Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm

Anne Frankplantsoen

The Eye of the Storm blinks a few times and looks around inquisitively in Anne Frankplantsoen. It attempts to capture the attention of you as a visitor to convey a message. Sometimes, we get so caught up in the storm around us that we forget to look and see, to observe what truly matters. In a chaotic world where people automatically get caught up in their daily routines, the Eye of the Storm reminds us to step out of this whirlwind occasionally and find the calm of the center.

The mechanical artwork stimulates the imagination when you take the time to pause. It represents a gigantic iris with a unique feature: the pupil enlarges and contracts. At times, it even appears to breathe. The Eye of the Storm hovers above the audience in the park’s open space. The iris is adorned with numerous short LED strips, giving the light artwork a versatile appearance. These LEDs can be individually controlled to create a mesmerizing light show. The Anne Frankplantsoen provides the perfect backdrop for this masterpiece. The space allows the audience to wander beneath and around the artwork, and the lush green surroundings enhance the ambiance and the message that the Eye of the Storm aims to convey. Students from various programs participate in the BeCreative minor offered by Fontys Engineering, where, as a collective assignment, they conceived a light artwork for GLOW.

About the artists

Fontys Engineering

The Fontys Engineering team consists of engineering students from Fontys, Avans, and an international student from Catalonia, with expertise in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Product Design, Healthcare Innovation, and Electronics. Their collaborative journey began when they enrolled in the BeCreative minor, a program that offers them the opportunity to create a light art project for GLOW. Inspiration for their work stemmed from previous GLOW editions, other light festivals, and intriguing architectural mechanisms. However, coming up with the light art piece was a challenge. The students are typically accustomed to clear, well-defined projects. “For the light art piece, we needed nearly five weeks, multiple brainstorming sessions, and more than a hundred ideas to arrive at ‘Eye of the Storm.’ After that, things progressed quickly, roles were assigned, and everyone got to work.” Mechanical Engineering students started working on the mechanism, while Electrical Engineering students made headway with the lighting. Collaborating with students from Healthcare Technology, Industrial Product Design students worked on visualization and sponsorship.
