Vollrad Kutscher
Vollrad Kutscher explores the relationship between individual identity and that of society, as well as the role that exemplary figures play in this dynamic.
During GLOW, Vollrad Kutscher transformed the former post office into a portrait gallery. Images of individuals who have been significant for the development of light and electricity, such as André-Marie Ampère, Luigi Galvani, Alessandro Volta, and James Watt, appear on the walls. Their contributions hold great significance, especially in the city of light, Eindhoven.
Small lamps are attached to twelve metal rods. The glass casings of these lamps are painted in such a way that the pattern of light and shadow on the wall forms a portrait. The artist also created photograms using these lamps. In a darkroom, he allowed the light from the lamp to fall onto photosensitive material. The exposed surface turns gray or black, resulting in a negative portrait. The twelve photograms are presented on either side of the light portraits.
