Children are born artists

Fabellicht

Legends, folktales, fables and fairy tales: storytelling has connected people for centuries. That same connection is felt by the children taking part in Fabellicht. Their own stories become the starting point for someone else’s. For where one story ends, another begins. Fabellicht is a tribute to stories: to passing them on, to the power of the spoken and written word, and above all to connection. We need one another to create stories. See Fabellicht as an invitation to share your own, whether grand, small or part of everyday life. Let yourself be seen and heard, just like all these children. Will you join us?

In Hugo Vrijdag’s light installation, 15,000 children from across the region take part in an educational programme that will be taught in schools from September 2026. As they participate, they also create stories, culminating in a breathtaking shadow play. Inside the darkened church, with its soaring ceiling and impressive rows of pillars, the children’s stories guide you through worlds shaped by their imagination. And do you see those beautiful spiral lanterns? Every single one was made by the children themselves, piece by piece. These luminous columns bring their shared story to life, creating a magical atmosphere here in the heart of Eindhoven. Take a moment. Wander. Wonder. Enjoy.

Stories from around the world

Children from all over the world can take part in Fabellicht. Whether you’re joining from a school abroad or drawing at your kitchen table on the other side of the world, storytelling is for everyone. Below you’ll find four drawing assignments for children of all ages. Upload your drawing to the online gallery before 12 October to be in with a chance of having it featured during GLOW 2026. Artist Hugo Vrijdag will browse through all submitted drawings and select a number of them to become part of the physical light installation in Eindhoven, Best, Oirschot, Helmond and Veldhoven. Your drawing could be one of them, no matter where in the world you created it.
