Construction for Erosion

Construction for Erosion

Bart Prinsen is fascinated by the tension between chaos and order, which is reflected in his multimedia installations using elements such as sand, smoke, light, and water. In the old textile factory of Schellens, he presents two new works.

“Construction for Erosion” consists of a metal silo with fine sand flowing through a narrow slit. The sand forms a thin curtain on which a stripe of light is projected. Due to the reflection of light on the rippling water and the uneven flow of sand, the projection appears as a wavering, continuously moving line. In “30˚ Blank Bubble,” a bubble is projected onto a semi-transparent screen. Between the lamp and the projector lens is a narrow reservoir of oil in which bubbles slowly rise.

The images in both works seem to repeat endlessly but are never exactly the same. Their organic forms and irregular movements make it challenging for the viewer to reduce them to a clear structure. Prinsen aims to momentarily halt the flow of thoughts and encourage us to look at the phenomena around us without assumptions.
