About the artist
Hugo Vrijdag and his concepts
Hugo Vrijdag (1970) graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. As a visual artist and designer, he combines his fascination with technology and storytelling. He writes stories that are turned into films, with the props he designs playing the leading roles. Over the years, Hugo Vrijdag has created public artworks and light installations for previous editions of GLOW, including the projects ‘Birds’ and ‘Sunflowers for Van Gogh.’
This year, he was inspired by The Overview Effect, a concept from American space philosopher Frank White. When astronauts return from space, three things stand out: they come back with a greater appreciation for the beauty of Earth, they feel more connected to all living things, and they experience an overwhelming emotional response from seeing the world from space. A journey into space forever changes their perspective on the world.
GLOW aims to raise children’s awareness of their role on Earth in an accessible way. By reaching children at a young age, a development is set in motion that contributes both on a personal and collective societal level. Through the children’s education program, GLOW emphasizes not only the value of art but also the importance of environmental preservation. By involving children in art while simultaneously focusing on sustainability, they are encouraged to actively think about their impact on the world, fostering positive change. In this way, GLOW hopes to contribute to shaping a generation committed to a more sustainable future.
