GLOWing Horizons

For the first time in almost two decades, GLOW extends beyond the familiar city limits of Eindhoven. This year, not only the city shines, but the surrounding region also comes to life. GLOWing Horizons brings light art to everyone, and that means a journey beyond the city limits with the light art installation CITYVERSE by OCUBO.

In this very first edition of GLOWing Horizons, the villages of Geldrop-Mierlo, Waalre, Oirschot, and Best take the lead with special buildings serving as canvases for light art. It’s a glimpse of what’s to come: a vision of the future with the region as a beacon of light. Witness how the Standerdmolen in Mierlo transforms, while in Oirschot, the centuries-old Sint-Petrusbasiliek and the Kloostertuinen shine in a new light. The Town Hall and chapel in Best become new masterpieces, along with the Weverijmuseum and the Weeffabriek in Geldrop, and the Huis van Waalre in Waalre.

Program Waalre

From Friday, November 10th, to Saturday, November 18th, the light art installation CITYVERSE will be displayed at the Huis van Waalre from 18:30 to 22:00. The projection is free to visit. Vortman concludes: ‘We hope that our residents as well as visitors from the region will enjoy this free spectacle. A wonderful event to experience culture.’

What will you see?

  • Real faces of Waalre

One of the Waalre residents who prominently appears in the projection with her photos is Mariet Wilders. She recently presented her book ‘Waalre 100 Faces,’ featuring 100 Waalre residents from different birth years. ‘I am incredibly curious. Some of my photos will likely reappear in the projection. My idea for a book started very small and is now becoming something very grand. The GLOW projection is the icing on the cake.’

  • Special Children’s Evening

GLOWing Horizons in Waalre kicks off with a special children’s evening on Friday, November 10th. Everyone (with children) is welcome behind the Huis van Waalre at 18:30. All elementary school children have received materials to make a ‘Go-GLOW-Light’ at home. A short walk through the Woldersven takes place from the Huis van Waalre. The walk ends in front of the Huis van Waalre, and there, the projection turns on for the first time. Afterward, the ‘Go-GLOW-Lights’ will find a beautiful spot in the garden of the Huis van Waalre

Program Oirschot

For those unfamiliar with Oirschot, you will be pleasantly surprised by the beautiful village center surrounded by numerous monuments. On the Markt, the impressive Sint-Petrusbasiliek towers high above the village. You can also admire the Kloostertuinen illuminated. From Friday, November 10th, to Saturday, November 18th, the light art installation CITYVERSE can be viewed from 18:30 to 22:00.

What will you see?

  • The GLOW route

The GLOW route starts at the Boterkerkje, where an exhibition of children’s artworks from OBS De Korenbloem will be on display. From there, you walk via the Markt to Museum de Vier Quartieren, where a special exhibition is showcased: Light! From the time of Van Gogh to contemporary light art.

Then, walk past the town hall towards the Tower of the imposing Sint-Petrusbasiliek for the largest light artwork: a tower-high light projection on two sides of the basilica tower. On the right side of the Basilica, you can also see the latest stained glass windows by artist Marc Mulders, named ‘De Betoverende Tuin’ (The Enchanting Garden). A premiere!

From there, head to Koestraat, passing the Hof van Solms first, and then go to De Brouwerij Vandeoirsprong. Both buildings are artistically illuminated using the ‘PANI’ technique. The route ends at the Zusters Franciscanessen. The second major light artwork is located at the back of the monastery garden, creating a magical scene.

From the monastery, walk back towards the Markt, enjoying a snack and drink along the way or at the Markt.

  • Additionally, on Monday, November 13th, from 18:00 onwards, you can view Het Schaduworgel at De Kloostertuinen. The Schaduworgel travels through the streets to collect stories. Moving shadows on the facades narrate the anecdotes and experiences of homeless people, refugees, nuns, and the elderly. The images and experiences they have gone through may be very recognizable. Come and see the mobile installation at De Kloostertuinen.
