Light Art Festival GLOW 2023: Broader than Eindhoven

From November 11th to 18th, the center of Eindhoven will once again be illuminated by the international light art festival GLOW. This year, the festival’s theme is ‘The Beat.’ The Beat both captures and conducts the rhythm of the city, the dynamics between the people who live there, and the life they share. What’s new is that GLOW Eindhoven is venturing beyond the familiar city limits of Eindhoven for the first time. Light art installations will also grace Best, Geldrop, Mierlo, Waalre, and Oirschot this year. Because light art is for everyone.

Ronald Ramakers, the director of GLOW, will open the 18th edition of GLOW, together with Mayor Dijsselbloem. Ronald Ramakers says, “For the first time in nearly two decades, GLOW is extending beyond the familiar city boundaries of Eindhoven. Under the banner of GLOWing Horizons, GLOW is bringing light art to surrounding villages. Unique buildings like the mill in Mierlo and the Weverijmuseum in Geldrop will serve as canvases for light art, and beautiful light art installations will also be showcased in Best, Waalre, and Oirschot. It is a glimpse into the future where we unite the region at the core with light art.”

The city makes GLOW

GLOW aims to bring people together, including residents of the city, the Brainport region, and visitors from all over the Netherlands and beyond. This inclusiveness is reflected in the light art. Early in the year, the region’s knowledge, skills, and manpower are connected with light artists. By combining high-tech, design, and creativity in this way, the light art installations this year are more than ever designed and made possible by the city and the region. Projects like Evolution of Life and Rhythm, developed by ASML employees and local experts, SHAPE by DAF, or Grand Mix at Wilhelminaplein, partially sponsored by Signify, exemplify this collaboration. And of course, the children’s project Ik zie, ik zie… at DOMUSDELA (paterskerk) involving thousands of children from the region. Additionally, various student projects are competing for the GLOW Talent Award, a prestigious prize that opens doors to an international future. Finally, residents on Heilige Geeststraat and Prins Hendrikstraat in the Bergen are also joining forces in Pulse. This strengthens the mission that ‘the city makes GLOW,’ creating an international community centered around connection and involvement.

The 2023 route

The GLOW route in Eindhoven is more compact this year, covering 5 kilometers. It runs through the city center and starts at Eindhoven Central Station. However, you can join the route at various points. Light art installations can be admired at locations like 18 Septemberplein, Emmasingel, Wilhelminaplein, Bilderdijklaan, Victoriapark, and Stadhuisplein. There are also light art installations by students from SintLucas, Fontys, the Design Academy, and TU Eindhoven in the Anne Frankplantsoen and on the Groene Toren. In total, the 2023 edition of GLOW features 24 light art installations by national and international artists.

The world’s most powerful laser

As the shining centerpiece of Eindhoven and the surrounding municipalities, GLOW has another surprise up its sleeve this year. GLOW has access to the world’s most powerful laser, visible up to 80 kilometers away. Every day, in dry weather, it will be activated at 22:30 and deactivated at 23:00, serving as a signal to the entire region that GLOW for that day is concluding.

GLOW is made possible with the support of its partners: Signify, Municipality of Eindhoven, ASML, BIZ, Brainport Eindhoven, DAF Trucks N.V., DELA, Eindhoven 52, Eindhoven Airport, Heuvel Eindhoven, Pronorm, Pullman, and Sahara Benelux.
