About the artist
Geert Mul
Geert Mul’s artworks are based on the enormous amount of visual material that comes to us via the internet and television.
For “The Match of the Day,” Geert Mul placed five lightboxes with photos on the facade of the Eindhovens Dagblad building. This medium attempts to bring structure to the flow of information on a daily basis. Above, a new image is shown every few seconds, “spinning” like a fruit machine before a final selection is made. This gives the impression that the selection is random.
Indeed, that is the case. Mul has developed software that allows a computer to capture a fragment from thirty international television channels at random moments. The 80,000 frames obtained daily are analyzed for 5,000 image features. Photos that resemble each other strongly are presented as pairs. In terms of content, the images often have nothing to do with each other, resulting in surprising, shocking, or humorous combinations. Geert Mul emphasizes that, unlike a computer, we cannot look at an image without interpreting it.
