The universe is full of secrets. After all, most stars and planets can’t be seen at all from Earth. Take a pulsar, the glowing remnant of an extinct supergiant star. This rapidly spinning neutron star emits two bright beams of light into space. It appears to flash—like a fantastic cosmic lighthouse.
With his light installation Signal CP1919, light artist Ricky van Broekhoven brings this mind-boggling mystery to life. Once upon a time, the flickering light in the sky made brilliant minds wonder: is this nature, or a sign of extraterrestrial life? That doubt is what makes the discovery of pulsar CP1919 in 1967 so special: a person staring into the darkness who suddenly heard something signaling. As if it were seeking a connection with Earth.
During GLOW, this work will be on display outdoors for the first time, right under the starry sky. Wander around it, view the work from different perspectives, listen, and realize: not everything is what it seems.
About the artist
From his studio Oscillating Matter in Eindhoven, Ricky van Broekhoven creates multisensory sound compositions, installations, and sculptures, taking as his starting point phenomena that we normally cannot see or hear. He literally makes invisible things visible and tangible. Ricky’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Mapping Festival in Geneva, the STRP Biennial in Eindhoven, La Gaite Lyrique in Paris, and the ION Art Gallery in Singapore.
